Blue River Trout on Fly
Late Winter Blue River Trout Lowdown
CHECK OUT THE BLUE RIVER VIDEO PLAYLIST HERE – Decades of Oklahoma Fly Fishing
It was only last week, so the cold and frozen parts have warmed up some! The Annual Blue River pilgrimage was a cold one this time, and I also had to suffer though some audio problems, ghosts in the machinery, so to speak. I want to believe I will get back there again – before the stocker’s brains boil, but the road is going the opposite direction next week, and there is no telling how long I will be gone.
DFW Natural Escape for Valentine’s Day
Yes, I would recommend a day visit and hike around The Blue River for a real a getaway from Dallas-Fort Worth. Your honey-bunny doesn’t even have to be the off-road type to enjoy this spot, and fly fishing is certainly not mandatory. The southern campgrounds are open now, and that gives you access to the Blue River that we have not easily had in (at least two?) seasons. There are briar vines, just like here in North Texas adventures, but everything else is frozen down, and the pesky leaves on the water have finally evacuated. If you and your honey-bunny want to sample the local cuisine – eat at Scotty’s – and tell JASON I sent you. The maps for The Blue River have already been posted here, and if you cannot download those, let me know and I will figure out how to get them to you. The lay of the land is pretty simple. The Blue River, with its beautiful water, flows through a long crack in what is basically rocky open prairie that is inside the Chickasaw Nation. It may not be a “10” on the scale, but the Blue River holds its own for access, rugged beauty, beautiful water and a genuine escape from our overcrowded Texas life.
Competitive Type?
The Blue River does have fly fishing tournaments, yes “s” means more than one every trout season. What can I say? There has been a radical shift of fly fishing population from BendBow to the Blue River going on for years now. And one of these tournaments predates the commercialization of BendBow that has hit full speed in the last few years. But, the fly fishing community has caught up to what’s real, and a real TRUE escape. HINT: It’s not Beaver’s Bend-Broken Bow anymore.
END NOTES: This is a place to take advantage of visiting as soon as the inspiration hits you! Don’t put it off. We can have incredible rain events that reshape and redo the beautiful waterway at any time NOW. Beware! There are NO WARNING HORNS on the Blue River. If it smells like a good chance for a flash flood? Walk away before you have to run away. The State of Oklahoma has some very nice people working there, so be nice Texans. Remember there are rules about CHECKING IN AND OUT of Oklahoma’s natural wonders now. Here is that video – NEW OKLAHOMA REGS! BUT, know that my 10-year-old phone did NOT get signal at the very first entrance to the Blue! So, there is a problem (watch the new video) with the system.
