Monday Morning Heats Up

Full Speed Ahead This Week

Suddenly, it is 80-degrees in North Texas, and the cold we count on for fast action fly fishing has left the region. As we have agreed upon for a number of years now; expect the unexpected, the unpredictable, the unprecedented weather patterns and annual 500-year floods in Texas – and you are not surprised, and you are prepared for fly fishing in Texas.

Bass on fly - Comanche Creek Texas
NEW VIDEO THIS WEEK! Comanche Creek Reservoir Bass on Fly in February!

Comanche Creek

I hope you took the time to read staffer Chet’s thorough story on Comanche Creek cooling lake. It is near Granbury, Texas, which is a fly fishing location unto itself, and a place for the entire family to have a day of it … while you fly fish your heart out any number of nearby places! Go Do Granbury.

I was one-third of a kayak armada that launched there Sunday morning, and if it were that simple, you probably wouldn’t be reading past this. IT IS NOT that simple at Comanche Creek. In fact, if anything the processes at Comanche Creek are becoming a little more complex. There are new signs for a new building and (I am guessing) boat launch/dock area. So I will have to see if I can get Chet to do a followup story on that. REMINDER: Comanche Creek Is NOT a year-round lake. It closes for seasons other than winter. This is good for the future building there that can be done and completed during Comanche Creek off season!

NEW VIDEO THIS WEEK! Blue River Oklahoma Last Week – Ten Days after the Ice Storm

Blue River Oklahoma

I froze my fingers off at the Blue River last Wednesday morning! I expected the cold, some cold, but the wind came whipping down the plain and through the river proper. That wind chill sent me scurrying back to the truck to warm up after about 30-minutes on the low water crossing. NOTE: That crossing was closed to traffic Wednesday, due to the ice on the other side. It probably reopened that same day, or by the weekend. The ice was still on the trails, although it melted off most of the exposed areas. And yes, it was just as slick packed ice there as it was here in the DFW area.

TWOFER Week on YouTube

Not only will there be two full-length (God help me and you) videos this week, after what I experienced on Comanche Creek yesterday, I know I am going to HAVE TO LEARN to tie the Game Changer fly. I have been asking my supplier, who you know very well, for a batch of his Game Changers for about a year now, but he’s way too busy catching fish to bother … So the black hole of tying the Blane Chocklett Game Changer is right in front of me, and I am about to fall in. It’s not that it is an impossible fly, it’s just that Danny Scarborough (the busy fly tier) does it perfectly. The articulation on HIS Game Changers is nothing short of spectacular, and Comanche Creek bass are in full agreement with that statement, as are so many other fish! Buttering up Danny Scarborough, in video after video after video, doesn’t seem to matter anymore, so I will butter my own bread from now on! It is what it is.

What I am trying to say is: The Game Changer is an advanced fly. It is not impossible to tie. It is extremely difficult to tie correctly.

Thanks for reading along! Be sure to catch up on video gossip on the Texas Fly Caster YouTube Community page very soon! It’s a whole other world, and it’s still free to read. Join me there!

  • IF you find a good Game Changer demo video? LET ME KNOW! If you know how to tie the Game Changer CORRECTLY – show me how! I have to have a couple dozen before spring springs. Feel Free to Think – what a sand bass would do to that fly!
