DFW Veterans Fly Fishing and Tying Programs
As of January 2026, two major programs for US Veterans exist on the northern side of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Both of these programs are different, are in Denton County, but work together to offer opportunities for Veterans to participate in fly tying gatherings and fly fishing outings. The fly tying and fly fishing is for those who have never touched a fly rod or tied a fly, and for those who may have years of experience. The fly tying experience is a lot like a community gathering, at one place with the same goals – to tie flies, swap stories and talk about fly fishing. The fly fishing outings are similar. We typically gather in one location, and then disperse to different parts of the ponds or rivers to take in our own experiences, at the same time help and instruction is always nearby. If you have never fly fished? by the time we gather at a pond or river, teachers and instructors should have you ready to cast a line.

The Veterans Point Fly Fishing Program
Located in Roanoke, Texas, the Denton County Military Veterans Peer Network has been around for a long time. Their fly fishing and fly tying program is lead by experienced and capable fly fishermen with decades of experience, and a dedication to helping Veterans learn about all aspects of the sport of fly fishing. They also have local knowledge about where to fly fish from Roanoke to the Blue River – a short distance away in Southern Oklahoma. The DCMVPN has a number of services Veterans find useful to their everyday life, and offers more recreational experiences than fly fishing and fly tying. Check out their website for current information and to sign up for events.
Our Mission
“Our mission is to Facilitate Connection for Veterans and their families. We provide direct peer-support to military service members, Veterans, and their family members (SMVF). We identify and screen resources, and collectively contribute to our local communities. Through our own experiences, we are able to relate and build trust with peers going through difficult situations. These shared experiences can be used as tools to promote growth and support.”

There will be a number of people doing a number of various activities related to art therapy – as we tie flies and talk fly fishing, casting etc…
When We Meet
The Art For Veterans program meets every Wednesday evening from 5:30-7:30. One night a month, the Veterans who are attending Wednesday meetings also have the opportunity* to devote time to learning about fly tying and fly fishing if they choose to do so. Starting in May we will have the option to tie flies the THIRD Wednesday of the month at regular Veterans Art Room programs, and concurrent with those events.
There are a number of customized videos for YOU to see and learn about fly tying and fly fishing as well! If you want to watch these videos BEFORE you attend a fly tying class, or review what you learned AFTER a meeting? These videos are available to you as well!
