New To Texas Fly Fishing

Go Nuclear For Winter Bass Fly Fishing – Riding the Fire Horse in!

If you are new to Texas fly fishing, looking for a winter fly fishing fix, and home water or heading south is way too far in the windshield? I have a lake for you! It’s called, Comanche Creek, and is a water cooler for one of two Texas nuclear power plants.

What that means is –

  • The water is always warm and even gets HOT!
  • It is a legitimate Texas WINTER bass fly fishing spot.
  • It is a tilapia hot spot.
  • Comanche Creek has its own set of rules and regulations.

Comanche Creek is a classic case of what I call, “Know Before You Go.” And there’s a lot to know about Comanche Creek fly fishing. And since you are here, let me be the first fly fishing website and YouTube Channel to point out a few facts about Texas energy generation! This is where the TEXAS GRID gets some of its power. Remember, Texas has chosen NOT to be a part of the USA National power grid. That fact is worth remembering when we have another “snowmageddon” event, like the one February 13-17, 2021. That event saw widespread long lasting power outages, thanks to our arrogance, and also caused loss of life (246 deaths). If you are new to Texas, take note of this fact.

In case you haven’t heard, Texas accounts for 28% of the Nation’s natural gas supply, so it is no wonder it is also the number one source for electricity generation.

SourceApprox. Share of Electricity Generation
Natural Gas (largest share)~43 %–48 %
Wind Power (second largest)~23 %–25 %
Solar Power (rapidly growing)~10 %–14 %
Coal (declining)~10 %–16 %
Nuclear (steady base-load)~8 %–10 %
Hydro & biomasssmall fractions (<1 – 2 %)

Please fee free to ask questions, and comment freely. Many of the traditional “Texas power plant lakes” have gone the way of the dinosaur. That is because they were coal powered plants, and you can still see them standing silent, and anglers standing silent on deck as well, across the huge State of Texas.

NOTE – The long article on Texas Energy will be published next week. It dovetails nicely with this story, and gives any new Texan a condensed version of Texas’ complex energy supplies and demands. Subscribe to the website to get notified of all the new stories appearing here this year!
